In the Dnipropetrovsk region, cyber police officers exposed a criminal group whose members stole money from citizens' accounts using duplicate SIM cards. The criminal group has been operating since August 2018. It consisted of three people led by a 41-year-old organizer. All participants are residents of Krivoy Rog. The theft of citizens' funds was due to the deactivation of mobile SIM-cards, whose numbers were the financial numbers of the victims. Having received a duplicate SIM card, the attackers gained access to SMS messages, pages of social networks and instant messengers, that is, to services using a phone number.
Subsequently, they changed the password for Internet banking and disposed of the funds of the victims. In addition, the defendants issued online loans. According to preliminary data, in this way they managed to steal almost 1.5 million hryvnias.
Information about the personal data of clients, as well as about persons who constantly kept a significant amount of funds in their accounts, was obtained by cybercriminals through corruption in banking institutions.
Law enforcement officers conducted searches at the place of residence of the defendants. According to the results, computer equipment, mobile phones, more than a thousand SIM cards, card holders, flash drives, a hard drive, bank cards, “draft” records and passports of a citizen of Ukraine issued to other persons with signs of fake were seized.
Compensation for part of the damage has already been provided by seizing the apartment and the car of the attackers.
Criminal proceedings have been instituted on this fact under Part 3 of Article 28 (committing a crime by an organized group), Article 185 (theft), Article 361 (Unauthorized interference with the operation of computers, automated systems, computer networks or telecommunication networks), 209 (Legalization (laundering) of proceeds from crime) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. All members of the group reported suspicion. The organizer and accomplice was selected a preventive measure in the form of detention.
Cyberpolice advises citizens to disable the service of a remote SIM-card replacement. In this case, its replacement can only be done in person, having the necessary documents with you.
