The phenomenon when information about a person is published without his consent in order to harm his reputation is called doxing.

According to a new poll by Kaspersky Lab, in Russia, about one in five (18%) of an account owner in an online dating app knows firsthand what social media harassment is. Other incidents faced by users of such apps include threats to use personal information to harm, posting screenshots of correspondence and personal photos in public space, and even harassment in real life. Moreover, such threats can come from those with whom users have communicated for some time in the application, and from completely unfamiliar people.

To minimize such risks, oversharing should be avoided, that is, do not share unnecessary details about yourself online. After all, if your home address, place of work, company name or phone number can be easily found on the Internet, attackers can take advantage of this.

The phenomenon when information about a person is published without his consent in order to damage his reputation is called doxing . Every fifth person who uses online dating apps in Russia has encountered it. Another 12% have not encountered it themselves, but they know someone who was a victim of doxing.

“Of course, you can find the love of a lifetime on social networks and various online dating apps, but there are detractors and scammers who use such services to collect data and then blackmail them. This is why it is important to follow basic digital security rules when communicating online. We recommend that you do not provide personal information such as phone number, location, home and work addresses, ”comments Anna Larkina, a content analysis expert at Kaspersky Lab.

To protect your personal data from intruders, regardless of the service you use, Kaspersky Lab recommends:

  • regularly check what permissions the applications installed on your devices have;
  • use two-factor authentication in those services where this possibility is provided;
  • track if your online account passwords have been compromised.
  • before you post something on the web, consider how it can be interpreted and used by other people.
